In 2015, I got hit by a car while I was pushing my broken down vehicle on the freeway. Apparently, I flew 20 feet in the air. I was hospitalized for a month, was in a coma for two weeks, and was in an intensive rehab center for another month– I had received a serious traumatic brain injury. To this day, I can still remember sitting in the rehab center like it was yesterday. Sitting there in my rehab center bed feeling really depressed… I was only 20 years old… and I could not remember what I did the day before.

It felt like I had thrown away the rest of my life. Prior to the accident, I was attending San Diego State University and I was taking my first semester of upper-division classes. How was I going to finish school? What would my classmates think of me? How was I supposed to find a job after? Thoughts raced through my head as I focused my attention on the worst case scenario… dropping out. I was supposed to be the first person in my family to graduate from college. Instead I felt like I was going to let everyone down…

Fast forward a couple years later, and now, I am officially graduated

It was a tough journey but I want to help other young traumatic brain injury survivors push through and still graduate from college. I received a ton of help from people around me, and I want to pay it forward. Here are my helpful tips to help you graduate from college if you have a traumatic brain injury.

My college has a “Student Disability Services” that offers free tutoring, testing accommodations, note takers and other free resources like a audio recorder for me to use. The first few weeks when I returned to school, I refused to use my resources because I was embarrassed of my disability. After failing my first test, I decided to put my pride away and get some help. My University’s disability services provided me with all the necessary resources that I took advantage of to pass my classes.

I would check to see if your University has any disability services available to you. You have to provide medical documentation of your injury and then they help give you the necessary accommodations.

Also I would highly recommend getting registered with the Department Of Rehab. This is a government program to help people with disabilities receive jobs. They will pay for your schooling, and provide you all the necessary resources to help you get the necessary education for the job you want. This is an extremely useful resource you need to take advantage of.

After receiving my traumatic brain injury, I became quite fascinated with memory. Why was it that I was able to remember certain things and completely forget other things? I started to pick up memory books to learn how to improve my memory. One of the books is Made To Stick by Chip and Dan Heath. It is a book dedicated to answering what makes ideas “stick” or be remembered. The Heath brothers wrote that there is a ton of backed research behind using associations to help you remember things.

Try to use associations when you learn new material. For example: Instead of saying there is a central object which is orbited by other objects when you are explaining atoms, you can just say atoms are like tiny solar systems. It makes it easier to remember.Similes and analogies are extremely useful to learn new material because it causes you to create associations with something new to something you already know.I would recommend giving Made to Stick a read. I learned a lot from it.

Hit your school gym, eat clean food, be in bed early, and take care of yourself! You might be pleasantly surprised at how great you feel. I personally would become exceptionally exhausted after taking a class. My brain injury really messed with my energy levels and my TBI made me mentally exhausted after every class. So, after every class, I would run to the library for a quick nap before my next class started. This might be helpful if you have energy issues from your TBI as well.

Also, after my accident, I took a year off from any alcohol or stimulants that could inhibit my brain’s recovery. (On my 21st birthday, I flew out to Las Vegas to watch all my friends get drunk and have a good time. That was tough!). It is up to your discretion on if you want to drink or not. If you do, all I ask is you do it in moderation. Avoid staying up late watching Netflix or just aimlessly browsing the internet. Take care of yourself! You will feel better. I promise.

After the accident, it is a struggle for me to remember what I did last week or the day before. Believe me. I know it sucks. But stick with it.
After a brain injury you can worry if you are doing things right and if you are getting any better. So you need to celebrate the small wins when they happen to remind you of both. My traumatic brain injury happened December 2014, and last night was the first time since that I have been able to use a tin opener without having to be shown! It’s taken almost 2 years for me to get it right! These days most tins come with a ring pull. So there aren’t that many occasions when you need a tin opener.

I never thought I’d say this, but the tin opener had become my nemesis.

But my partner James, has a liking for some particular baked beans which come in a tin without a ring pull. He doesn’t have them very often. But that sense of fear and dread descended upon me when he asked me to add them to his dinner. Previously, when I had struggled with the tin opener, I felt stupid and inadequate. I genuinely couldn’t work out how it functioned. I knew what it was, and that it needed to attach to the can and you twist the handle, but still couldn’t get it right.

This time I didn’t mention my fear to James, as I wanted to push myself.

I started to position the tin opener on the can in a way that felt right. Even at this point I was preparing myself for disappointment. I was sure every other attempt had been exactly the same but ended badly. This time though I felt it pierce the tin. This was further than I’d ever got before. A smile crept onto my lips as I started to get excited. I began turning the handle and the can started turning as the blade sliced the tins lid. I’d done it! I have no idea what I did differently, but I’m just relieved that this time my brain got it right. Brain 1-0 Brain injury.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="3272" data-permalink="https://www.jumbledbrain.com/5-shrewd-steps-unlock-recovery-brain-injury/5-shrewd-steps-to-unlock-your-recovery-from-brain-injury/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.jumbledbrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/5-shrewd-steps-to-unlock-your-recovery-from-brain-injury.....png?fit=800%2C1200&ssl=1" data-orig-size="800,1200" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-title="5 shrewd steps to unlock your recovery from brain injury…." data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.jumbledbrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/5-shrewd-steps-to-unlock-your-recovery-from-brain-injury.....png?fit=580%2C870&ssl=1" data-recalc-dims="1" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-3272" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.jumbledbrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/5-shrewd-steps-to-unlock-your-recovery-from-brain-injury.....png?resize=580%2C870&ssl=1" alt="My win with a tin opener inspired me to write 5 steps to see your brain injury recovery.
Don’t worry, I’m not expecting party poppers and champagne. I mean it is just opening a tin, and I’m sure in time the tin opener will become completely obsolete. But it is a milestone for me and that’s important. I’m telling you about this little triumph over my brain injury, because it’s an example of how if we take notice of our small wins we can define our progress.

Here’s how you can make sure you recognise your achievements in 5 steps.

Small goals

– You might hope to make an entire family meal, but that’s incredibly complicated. After all, I can’t cook the meal if I can’t even get the ingredients out of the container.

Reward yourself

– I’m not saying I bought myself some Jimmy Choo shoes to congratulate myself (although I might have in my dreams) but it’s important to mark these little wins to keep yourself motivated. It could be having your favourite coffee with marshmallows , or in my case it just giving the cat a very unwanted cuddle.

No deadlines

– We are used to targets having time frames, but all this is going to do is put you under pressure. I didn’t specify what time I was aiming for dinner to be ready, so it didn’t matter if I needed extra time to have a fight with the tin.

Done list

– We’re all used to the faithful To Do List, and it’s really useful at reminds us whats next. But we so quickly forget what doesn’t belong on there anymore because it’s completed. So if you have a Done List you can look back over how far you’ve come. If I didn’t write it down, this time next year I’d probably forget that I’d retaught myself how to open a tin.

Different perspective

– That family meal might feel like a hike up Mount Everest. That sounds awful to me. But let’s flip that and try looking at it another way. Most travellers will agree the descent is easier than the ascent, so lets do that. You’re working your way down and there’s some good stop off points on the way. Cute animals, beautiful views, yummy restaurants, whatever works for you, these are your rewards.

I know this sounds like the ramblings of a mad woman (or crazy cat lady) but it really does work. This is a method some of the most successful people use. It helps keep them stay motivated and keep reaching up for the next step, even when it felt like the world was against them.
