On the morning of December 13th, 2007, imagine you are a carefree senior, excited to be driving, super independent having two jobs then boom your life is altered. I was driving back to Locust Valley High school on a free period. The weather was horrible; it was hailing, sleeting, and snowing outside. I drove a 1983 Mercedes Benz that my friends and I called Oscar the Grouch because when you started the car, you were able to hear it from miles away. It was an old car and I was a new driver, not a good mix!

Driving around a bend back to the school, I swerved into the oncoming lane and hit a van. Luckily, there just happened to be an off duty EMT professional that is also a teacher at the Mill Neck Manor school of the Deaf two cars behind the van that I had hit. His name’s Tom Winslow, and he immediately saved my life at the scene. The seatbelt was choking me, which he was quick to identify and deal with. Tom, EMT’s, firefighters and police from the Locust Valley Fire Department put me into an ambulance and off I went, to Nassau University Medical Center Trauma Unit. I only recently found out from my cousin that they shut down all the intersections “like a red carpet” she giggled and shook her head; bewildered. The simple fact that I am breathing and alive is a miracle. They had to escort me to hospital because they as much as they wanted to, they couldn’t air lift me. The helicopter could not handle the weather.

The injuries were severe

Upon arrival at the ICU, I was intubated which means they put a tube in one’s throat to help them breathe and they also put me on life support for the next two weeks. When one is unconscious the doctors give a Glasgow coma scale which is a scoring system used to see the state of a person’s consciousness. This helps dictate where one is at when they suffered a traumatic brain injury, I was between a 3 to 7 on a scale of 3 to 15, the latter being a normal brain.

Timing was everything, from there they diagnosed me as having a subdural hematoma. They needed to perform immediate surgery known as a craniectomy, which is the removal of the skull. I was hemorrhaging which is when one is internally bleeding. Brain stents were put into my skull to alleviate the pressure and internal bleeding. They kept the skull out and I was in a coma for a month and half.

Finding the right medical team was vital

Near Christmas, my mother and father came to the understanding that I was not going to make progress where I was at. They somehow found a helmet and a special ambulance to transport me to the best doctors at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. Doctor Brian Greenwald was my main doctor, he changed my medications, and I woke up from a coma by the end of January. When I woke up, I thankfully remembered all of my family that was right by my side the whole time. The right side of my body was completely numb, kind of like when you are on the gravitron at a local fair and you cannot lift your body because of the gravity. The medical term for this is hemiplegia. Everyday going forward, I had to relearn how to walk, talk, write and do everything all over again, the simple habits and motions of life.

Around valentine’s day, I left, went back home with a concave skull, and celebrated my 18th birthday with family and friends. I always had that helmet on too! I went back on March 3rd, 2008 to have the surgeons perform a cranioplasty. “Surgical procedure done to correct a defect in a bone of the skull” (https://www.princetonneurologicalsurgery.com/our-services/brain-surgery/cranioplasty/). The surgeons put in an acrylic plate with metal screws to keep it intact. I was awake for the ICU which was scary and then March 19th, 2008 I was out for good. As I walked through my high school graduation, I received a standing ovation, which now thinking back puts everything into perspective, how strong of a woman I am.

Meeting other inspiring brain injury survivors was an important step in my recovery

From there my parents put me into a program called “Phase Two” at Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Center, which was an outpatient program. I had met some amazing survivors, John Byler, being one of them, who has a nonprofit organization called The BISON Foundation.

Bison is an acronym that stands for Brain Injury Support: Operational and Neurological, “we are pioneering new and better ways to help those affected by TBI”.

Giving back to other brain injury survivors

Phase two helped me so much in my recovery and I am so grateful for the therapists, nurses, doctors, and medical professionals at the Mount Sinai. There I learned how to take charge and become aware of my emotions and slow down my reaction to my triggers. After phase two, I started taking a couple of classes in college which didn’t ultimately work out because I was not ready. Next I went through a deep depression but after years of finding myself, I have a stronger & closer bond with my family. I’ve met a beautiful man who I currently live with, have a great job, I drive, and I am now giving back to traumatic brain injury survivors. Giving warriors a space to find peace and understanding that it is going to be alright; “there’s beauty in the process” as Tyquan, my boyfriend would reassure me whenever TBI knocked me down.

I’m sure I don’t need to explain what a bad brain day is to other brain injury survivors. Pretty much it can mean anything where your brain is misbehaving and distorting your thinking process. Often we will refer to it when we realise that we are struggling with something such as reading, problem solving, remembering details, or something like that. These can be frustrating and distressing. But then there are the days when you know you’re not at your best but you don’t realise just how bad you are. One of which I was reminded of the other day….

How a bad brain day hit me at the wrong time:

My partner James told me he was having lunch with a former work colleague and asked if I could give them both a lift to the restaurant next weekend. Of course I said I would. And then he told me to be careful as I drive round a particular mini roundabout which has an awful dip on one side, as last time I gave them a lift I almost had an accident there. The memory of that day came flooding back, and how I hadn’t felt at my best that day…..

I knew I hadn’t had much sleep as I’d been ill in the night. But I was determined that it shouldn’t change the fact that I was going to give them a lift. Besides, after dropping them off I could go back to bed and snooze to my heart’s content. James said they could get a taxi but I wouldn’t hear of it. Just as we set off I realised I was worse than I thought.

My left leg shook each time I used the clutch pedal. (I drive a manual car, or stick shift as my american friends call it.) I knew the shaking was my nervous system and was an indication that my brain injury was complaining. However, as I’ve said before in 7 Executive dysfunction challenges after brain injury, when my brain is struggling it can impair my judgement and lead to bad decisions. On that day I decided not to tell James I’d noticed I wasn’t well, and continued the journey anyway. I didn’t tell him because I knew he’d tell me to stop, and I really wanted to do a favour for him on that day. He is always doing so much for me so I wanted to repay him in this small way.

My brain injury was causing so many bad decisions!

Now I would be shouting at that girl to stop and think about the danger I was putting everyone in. We all have at some point made a bad decision when driving a car. Often we get away with it, sometimes we don’t. Seeing as a car accident (that wasn’t my fault) was what caused my brain injury, the irony of my brain injury trying to cause a car accident isn’t lost on me. Although we all survived my close encounter with the roundabout unscathed, it did serve to remind me to not underestimate how my brain injury can affect me.

As James reminded me of this incident, I told him I really wasn’t well that day. He ordered that I tell him if I feel like that again. But I told him that part of the problem is that when I’m that bad, I don’t have the insight to be able to recognise it properly. (There is another, less dramatic example, of this in Lack of insight when brain injury strikes.)

So he knows he will have to overrule me if he gets the faintest hint that I’m not in a good place. Even if that means I’ll get all grumpy and take offensive. Believe me, I’d rather that than to cause anyone harm because I drove a car during my bad brain day. I know that is putting the pressure bad on him to make that decision, but thankfully he can take it.

The final plot twist….

It turns out that I can’t give James and his friend a lift when they next meet because I am already booked to met some former school friends who I haven’t seen for a long time, but I’d forgotten. At least I’ve remembered in time as last time I didn’t remember until hours after I was supposed to meet them. Bless, them they didn’t chase me because they figured that I had forgotten. They knew my brain injury affects my memory and didn’t want to stress me out. So watch out girls, I’m definitely coming this time…

Life was great that fall morning. Having just spent the night at my boyfriend’s house, I was watching the sun rise as I drove to a job that I loved. Finally I held a position within an Organization that I had been dreaming about. I was healthy, happy and extremely driven. I was in a wonderful relationship that had just blossomed and I had great friends both personally and professionally. With an exceptional driving record for the last twenty years, I was an excellent driver and I had never been in a horrific accident. As someone who well liked and full of confidence, life was good.

I vaguely remember the first impact from the distracted driver that had hit me from behind, causing me to be tossed around in my vehicle and I do not remember the second impact from a tractor trailer. I remember feeling trapped, cold, frightened and confused. Having been rushed to a local hospital, I was immediately transferred to a trauma hospital where I stayed for a few days mending multiple injuries including a brain injury.

My good life now consisted of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, medical appointments, legal appointments, sleepless nights, nightmares, financial burdens, anxiety and chronic pain. Once mobile, I was introduced to outpatient rehabilitation where I attended twice a week. After a year or so I was told I had reached a plateau which meant I had to accept the fact that I will not fully recover but I would continue treatments. Did I mention my good life also consisted of depression and weight gain? Receiving news that you have reached a plateau in your recovery can do that to you.

Every activity is painful and you are forever mourning the “you” who once accomplished so much in a day. Confidence has taken a back seat and I no longer enjoy being in a vehicle. I can now predict weather and can tell you when it will rain. I can even go as far to tell you when there will be a change in the barometric pressure lucky me! A peaceful night’s sleep is a thing of the past as my nights are now being interrupted with trying to find comfortable positions to deal with the pain. I lost a job I had worked so hard for and close friends disappeared. My good life is now facing the fact that I have arthritis in many areas of my body and I feel like I have aged 10 years.

Financially, this life changing event almost broke me. The battles that take place with insurance companies after a car accident is shameful. Fighting for what you paid into is a full- time job in itself. My good life now consists of hearing numerous remarks from people that seem to know me better than myself. Remarks such as: “Must be nice to not have to work”, “You will feel better once you get your settlement”, “You look fine”, “You need to get over it” and “There is nothing wrong with you” just to name a few. I still get upset and angry hearing these types of comments because people just don’t seem to get it.

That decision was made for me because I could not work.

For the people that think I have it easy, I did not choose to become forgetful and no longer a multi tasker. That decision was made for me because my head crashed into the windshield of my car which caused a traumatic brain injury.

For the people that think I have it easy, being involved in a car accident is not a sudden windfall. I would prefer to be driving into work today but I am not able to.

For the people that think I have it easy, I did not choose to have PTSD. That decision was made for me after being involved in a horrific car accident.

For the people that think I have it easy, I did not choose to stay in bed all day today, that decision was made for me because I live with chronic pain.

For the people that think I have it easy, although I may look fine to you, I ask you to remember that my life completely changed because of my accident. Surviving a car accident is a daily struggle on so many levels and even though you may see me smiling, I suffer from chronic pain, PTSD and I am on my third night with barely any sleep. Unless you have experienced a horrific car accident first hand, you will truly never understand so please don’t be so quick to judge us.

She writes on her blog God’s whispers of truth, how her faith has helped her to survive pain filled struggles. It has been especially important for her as her brain injury went undiscovered for many years. Finally, she began to understand what she had been going through. Only approximately 18 months ago, her husband convinced her to see a chiropractor. She had experienced numbness from the waist down for the second time within one year. That’s when the X-rays showed a head injury/compression.

I’m not sure which of my three car accidents gave me TBI. The first accident of 1991 was by far the worst. Two beautiful girls were killed that day, after our minivan went past the guard rail. It rolled down an embankment, loaded with us, six youths en route to summer camp. Our 17 year old driver spaced out at the wheel. I’m guessing that caused the most damage to my skull and dura matter, even though I walked away from that outwardly unscathed. The following two accidents gave me a pretty good whiplash. Both occurrences, I was rear ended by larger vehicles (a church van and a suburban) than I was driving at that time. I did end up in months of physical therapy after the final accident because of back problems which never shined a light on my skull compression.

I had years of migraines. I never knew why I was so nervous and jittery, and finally in more recent years, fatigue.

In August of 2016 this undiscovered head injury started having a domino effect on my thirty-something-mom-of-four body. My neck, spine, and sacrum began to fall to pieces resulting in going numb from the waist down. We went to a chiropractic specialist who first discovered I had a head injury. In order to halt the progression of my deterioration, they started doing cranial-sacral adjustments right away.

Nothing could have prepared me for the grueling months to follow.

Two months into the process, my adrenal glands went into failure from severe electrolyte imbalance. After finding a medical professional that knew how to help that issue, I began to push through adjustments with slow progress. And God is holding me….

But after my head injury it had got even more ridiculous. My partner James felt the need to walk behind me when going up stairs, and in front of me when going down so if I fell he could cushion me. But it wasn’t just the stairs we had to worry about.

Lots of people have accidentally hit their head on a open cupboard door but usually they learn from the experience. I didn’t.

Left unsupervised I could get myself into all kinds of trouble. Stupid things like I might take the lightening cable out of my phone that had been charging over night, but drop the phone through the open iron head board. Reaching down to retrieve it, I would forget a little thing like there being a wall, and smack my head.

Once you have a head injury, any time you hit your head it feels like you’ve gone back to where you started.

Every time a had a silly accident like this it hurt like hell. I’m not talking about the bump or bruise, I’m talking about feeling like your head is going to explode. If you have ever seen one of those films where someone gets trapped in a decompression chamber and the other guy throws the switch so the person inside explodes, the moments before they die their face explains it all.

The worst one was the accident I had with a revolving door.

I’d gone to see some friends who’s office had moved into a posh service centre. I’d been there before so I knew what to expect. Perhaps if it was because I was thinking about where I needed to be, but this time as I left I got it all wrong.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="2783" data-permalink="https://www.jumbledbrain.com/mind-your-head/why-you-must-mind-your-head-after-brain-injury/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.jumbledbrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Why-you-must-Mind-Your-Head-after-brain-injury.png?fit=800%2C1200&ssl=1" data-orig-size="800,1200" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-title="Why you must Mind Your Head after brain injury" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.jumbledbrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Why-you-must-Mind-Your-Head-after-brain-injury.png?fit=580%2C870&ssl=1" data-recalc-dims="1" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2783" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.jumbledbrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Why-you-must-Mind-Your-Head-after-brain-injury.png?resize=580%2C870&ssl=1" alt="After a brain injury the last thing you need to do is have a bang to the head, so you must take care.
I didn’t notice that there wasn’t a open space and that it needed to spin a little more. I just walked straight into the glass. Wham. But I was so busy trying to regain my composure and dignity that I just carried on. The pain was unbearable, but I got into my car ready to leave. I reversed out, and started driving past the other parked cars. Then someone else started to back out, and it seemed they hadn’t spotted me yet. I knew I had to respond, but as I’d just bashed my head so hard I just couldn’t think fast enough how to stop the car! So I stepped harder on the accelerator hoping I could get out of the way fast enough.

I was lucky this time to get away with it. But it did scare me how I couldn’t remember how to move my leg to hit the break.

Multiple concussions are very dangerous. The brain finds it harder to recover from multiple injuries particularly when it is still working on one. So if you have or know someone who has had a head injury, please look out for them. The brain is as precious as it gets, and so far a transplant isn’t possible.

After a head injury you need to make sure you are fit to drive again.
