If you’ve been following me for any time at all, you’ll know I’ve had a bit of a comeback from a pretty devastating surgery–brain surgery. Hard to believe, but my surgery was in April 2011. That means I’ve been dealing with a mind full of jumbles for almost ten years.

It’s thrilling to speak to groups of women when I have the jumbles. While it does bring its obvious challenges when I forget a name or lose my train of thought, I am always encouraged by the grace that others give me.

Trying to write after brain surgery brings challenges as well. Like most writers, I deal with the distractions of social media and rabbit holes. But add to it the task of trying to stay razor-focused on the task at hand when your mind is doing summersaults.

Jumbles Give Me Reason to Smile

When I write, I enjoy the seclusion of my own office. There, I can best control my jumbles. There, find the structure I need to do what I need to do.

And isn’t that what it’s like for each of us … finding a way to do what we need to do?

Each of us has a struggle … a type of mind jumble. Maybe yours in a past that keeps you from reaching for the future. Your mind is filled with all the reasons you can’t succeed. Or maybe your mind is filled with comparisons. Why you think others are more qualified than yourself.

On September 4, 2010, I was enjoying Labor Day Weekend in Lake Tahoe. On September 5th I was speechless and paralyzed on my right side following a severe left brain stroke.

Before my stroke I was a tenured professor in the graduate schools of Education and Business at Stanford University. I taught, researched, and wrote about identity, gender, diversity, and social change. I also skied, ran and biked. I knew who I was.

My stroke took almost all of that away from me. I felt like a different person. While I won my struggle to survive, much of my identity—as a Stanford professor, a speaker and writer, an athlete, a mother and a wife—was gone. My mind was working, but I was trapped inside a broken body unable to do what I used to do. And maybe even worse, I couldn’t tell anyone what I was experiencing.

Initially, given my disabilities, I completely lost my independence. I lost control of my life. I needed help with everything. That was SO frustrating. Fortunately, over the past 7 years, I’ve regained enough to be independent for all the basics. But I still lost my career as I knew it. I still can’t speak easily in groups. I can’t do the sports I used to love. I know I won’t regain all of the capabilities I lost. I get frustrated and angry a lot. But I still work hard to recover as much as I can.

After my stroke, I found books that helped me understand the physical recovery process, but much less to help me understand my equally difficult emotional journey. So I am writing Identity Theft: Rediscovering Ourselves After Stroke with the help of my co-author, Sally Collins. Because of aphasia, I am not able to write the book myself. It will certainly include my personal story of rediscovery, but will also draw on the experience of 30 other stroke survivors I’ve talked to, as well as stories from families and caregivers of stroke survivors.

Writing the book is helping me deal with my loss. Not to get over it. I’ll never get over what I lost. But to get past it. I’m trying to rebuild my life around what I can do today. Looking forward, not back. Trying to build a new and different life, but hopefully one just as meaningful as the one I had before my stroke.

I’m very much still on my journey. Recovery from a severe stroke takes years, decades or a lifetime. Often complete physical recovery never happens. I don’t think it will for me. Does that mean I can’t recover? I don’t think so. I’ve come to think that “stroke recovery” isn’t just about regaining capabilities. It’s about successfully building a full and meaningful life, whatever ongoing disabilities one may have.

Am I the same person I was before my stroke? No. But is there a lot about me – about my identity – that remains. I think so. I’m no longer a tenured professor, which I thought was central to my identity. But writing Identity Theft has helped me find new ways to create and share knowledge, which was always at the core of what I love doing. I hope to have my book out next year (spring, 2019) and I hope it will help other survivors on their journeys to rebuild lives of joy and meaning.

Here in Britain it has got really quite warm with very little rain. I know that as it is July, and therefore summertime, I shouldn’t be surprised. But the seasons for this little island are not that predictable. So actually to have weather that could be described as summer, is almost unusual. But whilst this is lovely, it is playing havoc with my brain injury symptoms.

How summer is a blessing and a curse for me now.

My biggest problem is the heat. Rather than a shearing heat, it’s very muggy. Even in shorts and T-shirt I feel like I’m being wrapped up in a blanket all the time. I explained before in Irritating temperature struggles after brain injury, how my body is much more fussy about what is a comfortable temperature. So at the moment I am sweating like crazy. (It’s a shame sweat has salt in it, or I could help top up the local reservoir. We haven’t had a hose pipe ban yet, but I’m sure it’s coming.)

But the most frustrating part is how that impacts my cognitive symptoms. It’s probably a combination of dehydration, and the extra work my nervous system is in going though. Together it leaves me in supper slow mode. Even though I have learned from previous summers (Pathetic holiday catastrophe, brain injury fail) I’m still finding it hard.

Oh what’s it called…. the thingy.

I know many survivors, like me, find aphasia a problem. Usually I can style it out these days, so most people wouldn’t think anything of it. Yes I will forget a word, but so does everyone, so as long as I don’t focus on it, nor do they. But in this heat I can barely make a sentence at times. Or begin to describe the thing so they can help me with the missing word. Seeing as most of my conversations are with my partner James, we just laugh at it. But I am avoiding speaking on the phone as much as possible at the moment. Otherwise the person on the other end thinks there’s a fault with the line.
I don’t remember much of my time in hospital following my accident that caused my brain injury. But I do remember my mouth and throat were so dry as I was “nil by mouth”, for a while. I kept making lots of complaint like noises, but that wasn’t getting what I wanted so I had to try to tell them. But I couldn’t think of the words!!! So I tried to make a sound that would better convey what I needed.

“Glug, glug, glug!!!”

My partner James, understood immediately, and he asked a nurse to come round with the soaking sponge they would put on my lips so I could just get enough liquid to answer the dryness.

I hadn’t lost the ability to speak all together but I was struggling to find the words, or when I found one I didn’t know how to put it into a sentence. This was when it became clear I was suffering from Aphasia.

Aphasia comes in different forms depending on the brain injury, some people are not able to speak at all. (When I was shouting the house down at night about whatever nonsense that came into my head, I’m sure some people wished I couldn’t speak.)

Message in – it can make it difficult to understand what is being communicated to you. I still find that I might not be able to follow a conversation properly if I’ve done too much that day, or they speak too quickly. Also reading can be affected which it was for me also, but luckily I’m 90% there now.

Message out – even thinking can be a strain, let alone finding the right word or constructing a sentence. I still struggle to find words, and I get so frustrated because I know it’s in there. But sometimes I confuse the meaning of words and pick the wrong one, but someone has to tell me and then it feels obvious. I suddenly remember they are right and wonder why I made the mistake. It’s similar with spelling. I always used to be the person you would use as your verbal dictionary, but even now post brain injury, there are times I can’t even think of the letter a word begins with.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="2834" data-permalink="https://www.jumbledbrain.com/aphasia-from-brain-injury/aphasia-from-brain-injury-2/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.jumbledbrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Aphasia-from-Brain-Injury.png?fit=800%2C1200&ssl=1" data-orig-size="800,1200" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-title="Aphasia from Brain Injury" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.jumbledbrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Aphasia-from-Brain-Injury.png?fit=580%2C870&ssl=1" data-recalc-dims="1" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2834" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.jumbledbrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Aphasia-from-Brain-Injury.png?resize=580%2C870&ssl=1" alt="Aphasia causes communication and language problems.
My speech was very slow and at times slurred. This made me even more self-conscious . I’d taken ages to find the word, then it came out like I was in slow motion, and to top if off it was slurred. I felt the need to keep telling people I wasn’t drunk.

As you can tell from the fact that I write a blog, my reading and reading has improved a lot. I can’t tell you how grateful I am for that. My mum taught me to read and write long before I went to school. I barely remember not being able to as a child. But suddenly to be in my early 30’s and barely able to make sense of the written word was terrifying and depressing. I’d always imagined that it must be so hard for those who were never taught properly to read and write. And yes, I can confirm it’s a nightmare!

So if you know someone who has a brain injury, remember to take your time and don’t rush. Try to be more succinct as long rambling stories can be hard to follow. And if they are searching for a word don’t just jump in, as that can be really annoying. By all means ask them to describe it’s meaning. You can try to find it together, but don’t just assume you know without asking. They might agree without realising that your suggestion doesn’t really convey what they were trying to say.
