Or I’m right about the date I’m meant to be there, but that’s not today’s date and so I’m still wrong. So why can’t I just check? I do it all the time so why don’t I accept that needs to be part of my routine? I find it so frustrating that I know I have this problem but I’m not helping myself.

When I arrive for the appointment and check in, I know I’ve done it again the moment the receptionist says “I can’t see your appointment for today.” Straight away I’m thinking of what I wrote down and what the date today really is. This happened this week when I took my Dad for a medical appointment. I’d driven for 2.5 hours the night before from mine to his so I would be ready to take him the following morning. I knew it was for 3rd November at 10.15. I even had checked the time again to make sure I didn’t miss it. When you’ve come that far even my stupid brain agrees it’s worth double checking. I would have done that even before I became so dreadful with dates.

<img decoding="async" data-attachment-id="3004" data-permalink="https://www.jumbledbrain.com/frustratingly-dreadful-with-dates-thanks-brain-injury/frustratingly-dreadful-with-dates-thanks-brain-injury-3/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.jumbledbrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Frustratingly-dreadful-with-dates.-Thanks-brain-injury....png?fit=800%2C1200&ssl=1" data-orig-size="800,1200" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-title="Frustratingly dreadful with dates.
This mistake didn’t affect just me.

So as I was checking him in, I was surprised when the receptionist couldn’t see his appointment. But then I thought how the evening before someone made the comment about it being November. At the time I thought that comment would be more appropriate on the 1st of the month. I assumed that as it was the 2nd she was just trying to use a conversation filler. But as I looked at the confused receptionist I realised my error. I was running a day ahead.

But this time it was even more complicated. Even when I asked if I was a day early, she said she couldn’t see any appointments for him at all. I know I can be dreadful with dates, but I don’t just make up appointments. Unfortunately I had forgotten the letter and it was sat in my house, the other side of the country. Another member of staff gave me a disapproving look and told me I should have brought the letter. Well that was it. I knew I’d made some errors, but I didn’t need someone telling me off. So I explained I have a brain injury so my memory isn’t great, but there’s no point in us going on about it because I can’t just get it. And I cried.

At that point they tried harder to find out when his appointment was due. I hate crying in public, but why does it take that for people to put in just a little more effort? As his appointment was with a mobile team it was on a different system. But yes I was a day early. Imagine if I’d accepted the first response of that he didn’t have an appointment at all. I would have gone home only to find I needed to reschedule the appointment and come back. I know the error was mine, which I quickly admitted. But I find it hard to understand why people are so reluctant to be helpful. It felt like they only took the extra step to avoid a scene.

I’m dreadful with dates, and accidentally make things confusing, but I want to be treated as a human. Not a number or naughty child. I’m a polite adult, I just sometimes need a little assistance. I treat others as I want to be treated, so I expect the same back. And that’s got nothing to do with my brain injury, that’s just being courteous.

Previously I was in recruitment and I had coached many clients on how to write a strong CV and interviewing skills. I’d always been pretty unflappable at interview and could quickly think of examples to clearly demonstrate the experience the interviewer wanted to know about. I was unemployed after resigning from my job helping new hairdresser apprentices in their first job (which I loved) after my car accident. But as no one had been able to tell me what to expect of myself I thought I would try to move back into employment, but take a step down.

I applied for an internal recruitment position with a national company who had offices close to my home. Completing the application form was OK as my CV already contained some valuable material so that wasn’t too taxing.

And I wasn’t surprised when I was invited to interview.

I thought I was prepared.

The interview was pretty detailed and I was doing quiet well actually. I could see I was hitting all the right buttons. Even when she asked about why I was prepared to accept I much reduced salary, I managed to confidently explain as I’d had a career break I felt working my way back up was what I wanted to do. Brilliant she was delighted with everything.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-recalc-dims="1" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3039" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.jumbledbrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Unexpected-interview-disaster-after-brain-injury.....png?resize=580%2C870&ssl=1" alt="As a former recruitment consultant I know the do's and don'ts for interviewing technique.
But there was an elephant in the room. The UK law limits what an employer can ask about disability. So I decided I would tell her what I knew she couldn’t ask.

However, this is where the interviewing disaster for this brain injury survivor started. I immediately started to cry as I explained about my brain injury. I felt a duty to be clear on how it affects me on a bad day. She was sympathetic and still said I should come for a second interview. But I knew that she was doing. She could not be seen as discriminating against someone with a disability. So she invited me to the next stage to in order to comply with employment law.

That’s when I realised that this was just another time that I was being impatient with myself. And trying to push myself too fast. I was crushed and all my confidence was zapped. I had failed, but only because I tried to do what I thought was the right thing. Otherwise it would have been fine. But if I’d got the job it would have been a mistake. I would still have expected too much of myself and made a bad impression when I was having a bad day.

What I learned was that I still had the interviewing skills. But I needed to apply them in a different way. I have the same intelligence that I had before. But I’m relearning how to deal with pressure in a more positive way.

However, if you feel ready to interview for your next job but what to brush up first, read Interview Tips That Lead to Job Offers.

If you need some hope for the future, read Achieving new things doesn’t end after brain injury, and Next chapter after brain injury, am I in it now?
