So many times in the early days after my brain injury I panicked that I was now useless. I slurred my words, couldn’t spell, and rarely knew what I was talking about. Whilst my partner James was constantly telling me that he could see my progress, I didn’t have insight. I was devastated because I was 32, and had been enjoying my thirties. Being in my prime I was finally achieving some long term goals. I was terrified I would be good for nothing, and worse, just be a burden.

2017, 2 years on from my accident.

Whilst I still am frustrated with how muddled I can become, I am getting used to trying to give myself more time. I continue to get stronger and build my resilience. This week I faced one of the biggest challenges since my accident by myself which tested so many areas.

I was going to visit my Dad who is currently in a nursing home, and stopped off at his house to read his electricity meter. Thinking this was going to be just a quick job, I was surprised to find a serious leak. Water was dripping through the ceiling in the lounge, even though there hadn’t been rain for 3 days.

Problem solving

Was it an issue with the water pipes, or the roof? First I assumed pipes as the leak is downstairs. But I decided to check upstairs and the attic. I found black mould in a bedroom and very wet bricks in the attic. So decided it was the roof and therefore I needed a roofer.

Motivation

Even before my brain injury, this was the type of thing I would leave for someone else to deal with. When my Dad was well, it was always his job, and since living with James he looks after it in our house. But this time I was the only person available so I had to step up to the mark. Or at least make an effort.

Resisting the impulsive urge

After going online and asking one roofer if he could come have a look, I was tempted to just go with whatever he suggested. That would be the quickest and easiest way of dealing with it for me. But it wasn’t the most sensible thing to do, so I put in the effort to find others to investigate and quote as well.

Controlling emotions

Dealing with emergency house repairs is always stressful. Thus why I have always taken a back seat. But this was particularly strenuous as I am legally responsible for my Dad. I’m charged with acting in his interests for him financially and his personal welfare. As he hopes to return home, this situation affects both in a big way. But I managed to show the experts the damage and ask relevant questions. Achieving this meant holding back the tears and remembering to breathe.

Planning ahead

I recognised that even when the leak is dealt with, the water damage meant the house would need serious cleaning. So I decided to invite in a cleaning company to have a look at the house to repair the internal damage, and make the place clean. The smell of the water and mould was overwhelming, and I suspect dangerous. So I feel it’s vital this next stage is also handled properly.

Decision making

After asking more than one person to quote on the job, I then had to decide who to put my trust in, and spend Dads money on. I decided to go with the more expensive, as he gave me more confidence in doing a good job. Who knows if I was right, but as there was no one with me, I had to own it. And I did.

<img decoding="async" data-attachment-id="3324" data-permalink="https://www.jumbledbrain.com/achieving-new-brain-injury/achieving-new-things-doesnt-end-following-a-brain-injury/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.jumbledbrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Achieving-new-things-doesnt-end-following-a-brain-injury....png?fit=800%2C1200&ssl=1" data-orig-size="800,1200" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-title="Achieving new things doesn&#8217;t end following a brain injury&#8230;" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.jumbledbrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Achieving-new-things-doesnt-end-following-a-brain-injury....png?fit=580%2C870&ssl=1" data-recalc-dims="1" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-3324" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.jumbledbrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Achieving-new-things-doesnt-end-following-a-brain-injury....png?resize=580%2C870&ssl=1" alt="A brain injury can make a lot of things more difficult than they were before.

Following a brain injury, most patients have issues with their short term memory. Pair this with confused decision making, and you have created the recipe for a diabolical organiser. As I currently don’t work due to my brain injury, I am now the homemaker, for now anyway.
Following a brain injury, most patients have issues with their short term memory. Pair this with confused decision making, and you have created the recipe for a diabolical organiser.

As I currently don’t work due to my brain injury, I am now the homemaker, for now anyway. So I do the majority of the cleaning and tidying, while my partner James goes to his rather demanding job. You might think that sounds like a reasonable arrangement, but there is a glaring fault. Me. When I do the tidying, there’s a good chance you’ll never find it again.

When I do the tidying the finished result looks great, but it’s not until later you begin to realise the mayhem that’s brewing.

I promise at the time, it all makes sense. I’m focused on the end result and so as I come across things that need to be put away, I quickly decide where they should be. But that’s the problem. With a brain injury sometimes your brain doesn’t categorise things properly and so makes mistakes. Sometimes I notice as I’m doing it. Like how a zillion times a day I try to put the cat food in the fridge, when it belongs in the cupboard next to it. (Alright maybe not a zillion, otherwise the cat wouldn’t fit though the cat flap any more.) But if I don’t notice, things can be put in places that any sane person would never think to look. Also I have a problem with throwing things away. I want the clutter gone, so it goes in the bin. But sometimes it was something I needed.

My poor efforts at tidying creates hours of frustration.

As my memory and attention span have been affected by my brain injury, I can’t remember where I put things. If they went back in their usual “home”, then that’s fine. But if not, they might be lost forever.

So here’s 4 tips on how to avoid this happening to you.

Commit to the job

If you’re not in the right mood, you probably won’t be able to complete the task. So make sure you’re ready to commit.

Throw away rubbish first

We can become easily distracted by items. Thinking about where they came from, or what you last used it for. Next thing you know you’re off in your own world and not concentrating. Just find things you know that need to be thrown away, and if you’re not sure leave it for now and move on.

Tidy by categories, not by room

I know it sounds crazy, but this way you are helping your mind to focus more. Whether it’s collecting all the kids toys, or going through clothes, you can make sure you see the bigger picture of this category. Rather than just seeing a messy or tidy room, your thinking more about each items purpose.

How does it make you feel?

So those items that you weren’t sure if you wanted the keep or not, what do we do with them? If it’s documents you probably should let someone else help you decide. (I say this because I throw away letters I should keep, but you might be OK at this) Otherwise think about if you want it, if you don’t need it. It’s about what you want to keep, not what you want to get rid of. Some things might be sentimental, but useless. So these can be packed away to make sure they are kept nicely, but you don’t need them out as they’re not used often.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="3317" data-permalink="https://www.jumbledbrain.com/tidy-brain-injury-4-steps/4-steps-to-tidying-after-brain-injury/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.jumbledbrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/4-steps-to-tidying-after-brain-injury....png?fit=800%2C1200&ssl=1" data-orig-size="800,1200" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-title="4 steps to tidying after brain injury&#8230;" data-image-description="<p>After my traumatic brain injury I can&#8217;t find things I&#8217;ve tidied away.I lose focus &#038; put them in silly places.
Britain likes to call itself a nation of animal lovers, but I’m sure that this is true of many other countries too. I drive everyone mental as I would love to make my home like Noah’s Ark, full of many different creatures. But don’t worry I’m not an animal hoarder, I just have my cat, Dexter the Bengal (who is snuggled up on my lap right now.) My partner James is always accusing me to being more interested in the cat than him. Whilst I have always been an animal lover, Dexter is actually helping me with my brain injury with animal therapy.<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="465" data-permalink="https://www.jumbledbrain.com/tbi-animal-therapy/purry-furry/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.jumbledbrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Purry-Furry.png?fit=940%2C788&ssl=1" data-orig-size="940,788" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-title="purry-furry therapy" data-image-description="<p>purry-furry therapy. He has to pay me back somehow! I don’t think I could take him on Judge Judy to sue him for it.

Research into the positive effects animals have on us goes back 150 years, but it’s only within the last 40 years that we have started to understand the science behind it. When we are with animals we release a hormone which makes us feel happy and trusting. This is Oxytocin. This might be why whenever I see someone walking their dog I feel it’s acceptable to ask the owner if I can give them a little stroke. I wouldn’t do that with a child, they would think I’m really odd and maybe a kidnapper. But with an animal I feel different. This is animal therapy.

OK, I know what your thinking, yes yes it’s very nice that she gets enjoyment out of animals. But that’s not all.

Oxytocin is very special as it ensures the body is ready to boost the healing process. I’m not saying Dexter will heal my brain, but when you have a chronic illness it’s common to suffer other illnesses as well, and your body takes a real hit.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="3033" data-permalink="https://www.jumbledbrain.com/tbi-animal-therapy/how-animals-are-great-therapy-for-brain-injury-2/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.jumbledbrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/How-animals-are-great-therapy-for-brain-injury.......png?fit=800%2C1200&ssl=1" data-orig-size="800,1200" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-title="How animals are great therapy for brain injury&#8230;&#8230;" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.jumbledbrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/How-animals-are-great-therapy-for-brain-injury.......png?fit=580%2C870&ssl=1" data-recalc-dims="1" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3033" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.jumbledbrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/How-animals-are-great-therapy-for-brain-injury.......png?resize=580%2C870&ssl=1" alt="Feeling low, and struggling with your health, can feel like others don't understand and judge us.
As many brain injury survivors struggle with mental health issues, pets can be a calming influence. That’s why it’s animal therapy.

You never have to worry that the dog will criticise you and make you feel stupid. They just want your love. There might be times that they want more attention than you have the energy for (Dexter is very guilty of this when he is tearing the house up) but they make up for it with their beautiful faces, and letting you know they love you just the way you are.

I also found that as I had limited feeling in my left hand, and therefore I struggled to feel animals fur, it became a way for me to actively recognise when the feeling was returning.
